Applied Research Day 2009 was held on Thursday, February 19th in the Technological Institute. The event was hosted by InNUvation and planned by a 6 member committee within The Graduate School Chapter of InNUvation. There were 19 presenters, 3 speakers, and 9 judges.
The speakers were Dean Julio Ottino, PhD (Dean of McCormick), Prof. Michael Marasco, MBA (Director of NU's Farley Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation), and the keynote was Dr. Charles Kuehmann, PhD (NU MSE Alumnus and CEO of QuesTek Innovations, LLC.).
The judges were Jim Bray (Assistant Director of NU's Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute), Alan Hauser (Director of NU's Technology Transfer Program), Jeff Coney (NU's Director of Economic Development), Ron Kirchner (President of Heartland Angels, Inc.), Nick Arvis (Leader of Presidents Advisory Committee), Tim Lavengood (Director of The Incubator), Joseph Firca (Associate Director of NU's McCormick Office of Corporate Relations), Delara Motlagh (Research Scientist at Baxter Healthcare), and Lora Palmer (Research Scientist at Baxter Healthcare).
We estimate roughly 70 attendees came to look at the posters and roughly 65 guests ended up joining us for dinner. The three winning posters were:
- 1st place: Ryan Hoshi of Biomedical Engineering for his project "Elasta-guard: a nanoporous biodegradable wound dressing for diabetic foot ulcers"
- 2nd place: Kelly Luckasevic of Biomedical Engineering for her project "Detection and treatment of metastatic oral cancer using gold nanorods"
- 3rd place: Elliott Rouse and David Nahlik of Biomedical Engineering for his project "Control of rotation for upper limb prosthesis through the use of an implanted magnet"
ARD is a poster session where students can showcase their research and demonstrate how their work can be translated into a business model. The posters are judged based on research content, business content, organization, and communication skills. Cash prizes are awarded to the top three presenters.
Thank you for your interest.
